Foot Washing on Holy Thursday

In John’s Gospel, which we hear on Holy Thursday, foot washing takes place at the point where the other evangelists speak about the Last Supper. It’s as though John is emphasizing the fact that Eucharist and service are two sides of the same coin. Nourished by the Body and Blood of Christ, we are sent out to serve our battered and broken world.   So, after the homily, we wash each other’s feet.

By washing one another’s feet, we are fulfilling Jesus’ command to love one another as we have been loved by him. This action is not a historical reenactment of what Jesus did 2000 years ago. It is a rehearsal for what you and I strive to do every day:  serve one another with love, kindness, and humility.

For many years it has been our custom to invite all who can to participate in this important action. You may have your feet washed by the person overseeing one of the six foot washing areas. You may come as a family and wash each other’s feet. Or you might wash the feet of someone in the community who has served you. You might even wash the feet of someone with whom you need to reconcile.

If you feel some resistance to washing feet or having your feet washed, you are in good company. So did St. Peter! Yes, it may seem a bit awkward, but it is, after all, what Jesus told us to do.
