Tenebrae

:

On Tuesday, April 9th, at 7:00 p.m., our parish community will celebrate Tenebrae. “What is that?” you may wonder. That would be an understandable response since this service is not well known, nor is it one of the principal liturgies of Holy Week.

Tenebrae, coming from the Latin word for darkness or shadows, is a Holy Week devotion that dates back to the seventh or eighth century. A gradual extinguishing of all lights characterizes it as the service progresses. The service, which consists of Scripture readings interspersed with incredibly beautiful music, anticipates the celebrations of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. All the various elements work together, in harmony, preparing the participants for the holiest days in our liturgical year.

If you have never attended Tenebrae, think about adding this event to your calendar this year. Trust me. You will not be disappointed.
