Lectors
Purpose/Mission Statement
"Readers exercise a genuine liturgical function. They ought, therefore, to discharge their office with sincere piety and decorum demanded by so exalted a ministry and rightly expected by God's people. Consequently, they must all be imbued with the spirit of the liturgy...and they must be trained to preform their functions in a correct and orderly manner." (Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy #29)
Time/Talent Needs
To proclaim Scripture and other liturgical readings and prayers in a manner which allows the meaning and significance of the passage to be recognized by the assembly.
Qualifications
A special love for the Scriptures. A good reading voice. Good public speaking skills. A strong desire to be a storyteller for the community. A willingness to take time preparing one's reading(s). Sure and graceful movement. Training for the lector ministry is a 4 - 5 hour Saturday session which includes basic communication skills, methods of preparation for proclamation and specific directions for this ministry.
Level of Commitment
Lectors prepare and proclaim the scripture readings at weekend Masses, Holy Days, and special liturgies. Lectors are also assigned as readers who do the announcements and read the prayers of the faithful. Members of this ministry may be scheduled approximately every 2 - 3 weeks. During Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter scheduling may be more frequent. When a schedule conflict occurs, the lector is required to find a substitute. Participation in the Lector Community Building evenings is encouraged in addition to any special workshops or training.
