Purpose/Mission Statement

"The people of God, that is, the Church, made present by the local community, has an important part to play in the baptism of both children and adults. Before and after the celebration of the sacrament, the child has a right to the love and help of the community." (Rite of Baptism for Children #4)

Time/Talent Needs

Baptismal Ministers provide a climate of hospitality for the parents of the babies coming for baptism, as well as their relatives and friends. These ministers also assist the priest or deacon as necessary.

Qualifications

A sense of Hospitality. An ability to make others feel comfortable and welcome. A big, warm smile. A love for children. An ability to mingle with diverse kinds of people. Interested persons are expected to attend a training session which focuses on the theology of the baptismal rite and an explanation of the various tasks related to this ministry. Observing one Sunday afternoon Baptism completes the training.

Level of Commitment

Baptismal Ministers are scheduled in teams of 2 based on their ability. Baptisms take place every other Sunday afternoon except during the Lenten season. Baptismal Ministers are also encouraged, but not mandated, to occasionally attend Baptismal class which is held the third Friday of the month.
