Purpose/Mission Statement

A separate Liturgy of the Word for Children allows the young people of our community to listen to God's word and ponder it meaning in a way suited to their abilities and their interests. As stated in the Directory or Masses with Children: "great care" needs to be taken so that "children do not feel neglected because of their inability to participate or to understand what happens and what is proclaimed in the celebration." (#17)

Children's Liturgy of the Word Volunteers NeededTime/Talent Needs

Children's Liturgy of the Word takes place during the 4:00 pm and 10:30 am Liturgy. Leader of prayer are scheduled approximately twice a month at the mass which is convenient for the minister. Shepherds (assistants), who work with the leaders, are scheduled in a similar manner.

Qualifications

Leaders of prayer possess a loving concern that our children will have their special needs met by hearing God's work in a translation suited for them. Leaders must also have a willingness to ponder the scripture and prepare for their session using the resources provided by the parish.

Leaders of prayer, as well as shepherds, attend an initial training session. Anyone over the age of 18, is expected to participate in a Protecting God's Children's workshop. Ongoing formation is accomplished through occasional meetings and Adult Formation opportunities in the parish.

Level of Commitment

It is desirable that leaders of prayer make a commitment of 3 years, thereby experiencing the fullness of the church's three year cycle of readings.
